Access & Actions: Actionable first steps for building a happier team (19th September 2024)

A 5-minute read and one-stop shop to make the action-taking easier.

In our last newsletter we talked about how we can take inspiration from the happiest country in the world when it comes to strategies for building better, healthier, happier work cultures.

Here are my recommendations on where to start if you’re looking to start the needed conversations and implement new employee support strategies.

Got A Minute?

Something quick.

Read this for a quick idea of why people are prioritising happiness at work, over other perks and incentives. “I’d rather be happier at work than get a pay rise- would you?” by Helen Coffee for the Independent.

3 Things To Look Into

For the small pockets of time in between the bustle.

  1. I love a good TED talk, its a great place to start to learn from the experts about a wide range of topics. So of course they have a great short talk about ‘How to make work-life balance work.’

Nigel Marsh talks about his experience of work-life balance, sharing four observations including a call for an honest debate on the topic, including highlighting how ideas like ‘dress down Fridays’ are part of the problem.

  2. BBC Bitesize ‘non financial methods of motivation’ lets us know that the next generation of managers are learning helpful strategies already… BBC Bitesize lays is out well, so there’s no shame in clicking through and seeing what they suggest!

Honestly, my cousins kids homework often baffles me, so just because it’s school level information, doesn’t mean it isn’t relevant!

  3. Happiness needs to consider everyone, and one of the most common ideas I see businesses do is run team building or team social events, to bring everyone together and- hopefully- have some fun bonding time.

Christmas is coming up (I know it’s not even Halloween yet, don’t hate me!) But if the team social is on your agenda for this year, have a read of my blog How to Host Inclusive and Accessible Team Social Events at Christmas (or any time of year) and get it right for everyone.

Thank you for being part of this month’s Access &...

Did you find this useful? Do you know someone else who might too? Feel free to forward it on…

See you back here in October!
