Access & Actions: What Type of Ally Are You? (24th July 2024)

Welcome to Access & Actions, the 5-minute read and one-stop shop to make the action-taking easier.

This month in Access & we talked about Disability Pride Month, and I shared with you my personal and expert insights on Disability Pride.

Access & Actions is designed so that you can dip in and out over time, with real-life case studies to inspire and actionable suggestions to implement.

Got A Minute?

Something quick.

What type of ally are you?

In 2019, Karen Catlin, an inclusive workspace advocate, introduced the 'Seven types of allies' concept, to help workplaces become more inclusive.

If you know what kind of ally you are, you gain clarity of the personal impact you can make, and the type of actions you can take as an individual to influence change in your workplace.

Explore the seven types of allies in this BBC blog.

3 Things For Coffee Break Musings

For the small pockets of time in between the bustle.

As we approach the end of Disability Pride Month, you might be wondering how to continue the mission to make your workplace inclusive. The month may end but disabled people will still wake up on 1st August disabled, and therefore, still experiencing the same barriers.

Watch this TEDx Talk Creating Inclusive Workplaces for All by Catarina Rivera, which offers a powerful perspective with actionable insights.

Plan ahead. At the end of this month, there will be 5 months left of 2024.

Now would be a good time to review and evaluate your access and inclusion efforts this year so far.

My ‘How to plan access and inclusion initiatives in 2024’ blog is still relevant, and most of the summits, conferences, awareness days and months listed at the end of it happen in these final 5 months of the year. How are you going to mark them at your company? Give yourself enough time to research, decide on and prepare for your plans, to show current and future disabled employees that they are valued and listened to at your company.
